Atomic Moo
Atomic MooLogo & Identity
Atomic Moo is a blog I started in June of 2010, focusing on “Geek” culture (comic books, movies, video games, sci-fi, fantasy, etc…). I probably should describe it as a blog for guys in their early twenties to late thirties with mild to severe arrested development. Maybe then I wouldn’t get such strange looks when I try to explain it to non-geeks, but then it’s not for everyone.
I started this blog mostly because I wanted something of my own that I could illustrate and design for, but I also wanted it to be something with a real purpose and identity; not just a made-up logo for a fake company that I could add to my portfolio.
Another reason I started Atomic Moo is because I felt my web design skills were not up to scratch. So I wanted something that would help me learn more about HTML, CSS, and just good design practices for the web. I also wanted to learn more about using content management systems, like WordPress, how to use themes and templates, and, hopefully, how to build them.
I still have a lot to learn, but I feel that starting Atomic Moo has pushed me to create more, and is helping me develop new skills. Since I’ve started it, I’ve also discovered that I actually like blogging. Though I’ve never been much of a writer, I’m finding that I like doing it. It’s always fun to “geek out” over the subjects you’re into.
I tried to design the logo to work in a couple of different formats, like the longer version at the top of the page, or like the one above with the logotype serving as a base for the cow icon.
I also wanted it to work in only one color, as it does as the normal full-color version.
This was the original inspiration for name of the blog, and also the logo. It was for a student project I did at Utah State University, back in 2006, to illustrate a “stylized” cow.

I created the logotype myself instead of choosing a nice looking font. I wanted more experience of working with type, and creating my own letters. I looked at several vintage science fiction posters for inspiration.
